We are Cobra Concrete Cutting Services. We are a specialty firm that provides innumerable types of cutting, sawing, and excavation services to general contractors and commercial construction companies.

We have been in business since 1999 and in that time have provided cutting, drilling, and excavation for over 100 commercial firms in the greater Chicago area. Such places as Soldier Field and Wrigley Field, DePaul University and Northwestern University, Costco and Sams Club, Adler Planetarium and the Lincoln Park Zoo – to name a few. In this post we would like to discuss the advantages of diamond concrete cutting and why we are the company in Chicago that contractors choose above all others.

What materials will a diamond drill bit cut through?

Since a diamond is nearly the hardest material known, there is almost nothing that it won’t cut into. Bore holes through various grades of concrete, hardwood, asphalt, tile, brick, and cinder-block. The main focus of this article will be concrete.

Why use a diamond drill bit?

A diamond core drill bit is hollow. This enables a greater efficiency in drilling than a regular drill bit as it is removing less material. A diamond drill bit is designed to manage many applications. The most common cores we drill are for plumbing, electrical wiring, HVAC systems, telecommunication lines, anchor bolts, and for an analysis various types of concrete.

What we want contractors know:

Core drilling is difficult when the operator does not know what they are doing. Cobra trained personnel are highly trained with an emphasis on safety. We require our new hires obtain certification with the OSHA-30 hour construction safety and health program prior to actual field work.

The actual process

Disclaimer: the information we are providing in this post is to provide confidence and sound advice when the time comes for reaching out to Cobra Cutting. This post in no way presupposes that you are considering this operation yourself. We do not recommend it and we are not attempting to teach anyone how to use a diamond core drill bit for coring out concrete.

Cobra Concrete Cutting field personnel know that some of the items they will need for the coring application are a core drill, diamond core bit, water hose, anchor, electric cords, wrenches, and appropriate PPE (personal protection equipment). Our employees will obtain training and knowledge to use the equipment in a safe manner.

At least four components entail a successful diamond concrete cutting application. No one component is more important than the other as they are all integrated to ensure a successful outcome.

  • Water – The correct amount of water is essential. An over-abundant amount of water and the concrete dust particles wash away, and nothing remains to keep the diamonds on the drill bit exposed. Not enough water and there is nothing to create the slurry by mixing with the dust and debris. When using the correct amount of water, the goal is to produce a slurry that keeps the core cool and the diamonds on the bit exposed as they come in contact with the particles in the slurry.
  • Anchor – In order to produce a core that is straight, anchor the drill rig by using a physical anchor rated for core drilling.
  • Speed – Proper grinding occurs with the motor set to the correct RPM’s. Diamond cutters perform optimal cutting at a predetermined surface speed. Standardized ratings consist throughout the industry. The smaller the bit the faster the speed. Therefore, many electrical drills come equipped with multiple speeds giving the operator the leverage to use different sized bits.
  • Power – In order to maintain the correct drilling speed, the operator needs the necessary amount of power to do the job. We recommend an amp meter in conjunction with electrical drills in order that operators can seek to push the drill to a maximum rated amperage but without exceeding it. Too much amperage and the drill will bog down, slowing down productivity and eventually burning out the inner components of the core drill.

By adhering to these four components, operators will be able to core holes with maximum efficiency, thereby increasing productivity.

From a tiny core of 1/2 inch all the way to 60 inches in diameter, Cobra Cutting is the choice above all others. Contact Cobra Concrete Cutting Services today for all your concrete cutting jobs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Not long ago, cubicles were torn down and private offices were abolished to make way for the open-office concept revival – in hopes that a shared space would inspire incredible collaboration and creativity. However, today, the open office is dying. Researchers have begun pushing back against the concept. This pushback may eventually lead to the demise of the open office, ultimately raising the question: what is the future of the progressive office?

In any industry, staying in control of your fleet is crucial to success. Perhaps an obvious example, the military functions under a tight command to effectively complete missions. Though fundamentally different, the concrete cutting industry requires control as well, especially for large and quickly expanding companies who want to be one step ahead. The Husqvarna Fleet Services system is a cutting-edge industry innovation that allows goal-oriented concrete service companies to function under complete order.
